Jack’s Journey from Struggles to Success

Identifying the Gaps

Jack, currently a 10th grader, was referred to XQ Focus Consulting in the middle of 8th grade due to major executive dysfunctions. These included a lack of organization, time management, distractibility and lack of sustained attention, all of which significantly impacted his academic performance and motivation. Jack struggled with maintaining focus during study time, which hampered his deep study quality and test preparation efforts. These resulted in poor grades. As a result, his motivation and sense of purpose were alarmingly low, leaving him feeling lost and overwhelmed.

Mapping a New Path

At XQ Focus Consulting, we began by helping Jack regain self-confidence through small successes, such as immediately improving his grades in English and social studies. Our deeper intervention involved collaborating with Jack to design an individualized time map of his days that balanced his academic needs with his interests, cognitive stamina, home environment, and personality type. This "routine chunking" method reduced his resistance to starting schoolwork and allowed him to gain control over his time. Additionally, tailored study skills were provided, enhancing the quality of his academic engagement.

Soaring to New Heights

As a result of these interventions, Jack's grades soared, and his confidence returned. He began participating regularly in sports and improved his social life. By 9th grade, Jack became a straight-A student, even excelling in challenging electives. In 10th grade, with our guidance, Jack took on AP World History and thrived in that and all other subjects. He developed resilience and adeptly managed typical social challenges, positioning himself to take three AP courses in 11th grade. We are looking forward to continuing our work with Jack as he is getting closer to formally starting his college application process.

Navigating Academic Hurdles and Neurological Challenges

Identifying challenges and Navigating Legal Eligibility for Support Services

Kevin was referred to us by his parents when he was in 9th grade because they had major concerns about his study habits, executive functions, and grades. Additionally, despite facing significant neurological challenges due to multiple complicated surgeries, which affected his information recall abilities, focus, and sustained attention, his school was reluctant to provide the necessary accommodations and support.

Upon gathering all the information and meeting with the parents and their child, we took a multifaceted approach to address his unique needs. First, we worked closely with his neurologist to build a persuasive case for why he was legally eligible to receive individualized educational planning. This ensured that he would have access to the necessary support and resources within the school system.

Tailored Study Skills Development

Simultaneously, our team of experienced experts designed a personalized plan to help Kevin develop effective study skills and become an active learner. In particular, we focused on techniques such as effective note-taking, information recall strategies, and test preparation methods tailored to his learning style.

Through our creatively personalized  approach, Kevin has developed key executive functions skills in a short time. Furthermore, our coaches have helped him develop metacognitive skills, boosting his confidence and enabling him to tackle AP and honors classes without feeling overwhelmed.

The combination of our advocacy efforts and personalized coaching has yielded remarkable results for Kevin. With the accommodations in place and effective study strategies ingrained, his grades have been steadily improving. Kevin has gained a newfound confidence and resilience, empowering him to excel academically and overcome the challenges he faced.

Thriving Beyond ADHD: A Tailored Journey with XQ Focus Consulting

Understanding the Unique Challenges of ADHD

Oliver was referred to us in the 4th grade after being diagnosed with ADHD. His older brother was already our client, so we were familiar with the family history. Oliver’s ADHD and executive function struggles were particularly severe, and we knew we needed a targeted approach to help him improve and thrive.

Like many children with ADHD, Oliver struggled with key executive functions, such as sustained attention and focus, planning, time management, task initiation, and organization. Traditional tutoring to tackle those challenges had failed to engage him as he had found it challenging to harness his boundless energy and creativity.

Tailoring Interventions to Individual Strengths

After a thorough intake session, we devised a unique intervention plan that incorporated movement-based activities that tapped into his love for novelty and creativity. Informed by the latest neuroscience research, we developed executive functions lessons that revolved around physical balance and cardio exercises, designed to engage his active mind and body. Additionally, we aimed to increase his attention and focus while fostering a growth mindset and a deeper sense of identity and purpose

Oliver’s response to our tailored intervention has been remarkable. He has not only developed essential executive functions skills but also has discovered and nurtured a passion for parkour, gymnastics, magic performance, photography, and creative writing. His artistic talents have blossomed, and he has even had a poem published in an anthology.

Thriving Through Personalized Growth

As Oliver approaches the end of 8th grade, he has transformed into an intrinsically motivated and organized student, equipped with the tools to thrive at school and beyond.

If you recognize these challenges in your child, know that there is hope. Our individualized approach has been proven successful for many families, and we would be honored to work with you to unlock your child's full potential. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and take an important step towards a brighter future for your child.

Transforming Writing Passion into Academic and Personal Success

Identifying Challenges and Tailoring Solutions

Emmett’s parents reached out to us at XQ Focus Consulting in the summer of 2016, just before he was about to enter sixth grade. A bright student with a knack for writing, Emmett required enrichment support in writing as he transitioned from a private school to a public school. Concerned that the school might not provide the kind of instruction he needed, his parents sought assistance to ensure his continued academic success.

Upon initial assessment and interviews with him and his family, Dr. Iman Parsa, the founder of XQ Focus Consulting, learned that Emmett was grappling with significant executive function issues and that he was formally diagnosed with ADD. Recognizing the complexity of teaching executive function skills to an 11-year-old boy, Dr. Parsa understood the need for a tailored approach to address Emmett’s challenges effectively.

Harnessing Writing Passion for Skill Development

Rather than employing conventional methods, Dr. Parsa utilized Emmett’s passion for writing as a catalyst for skill development. Understanding the inherent link between writing and low-tier executive function skills (such as task initiation, procrastination, time management, attention, planning, and organization) as well as high-tier executive functions (such as motivation, self-awareness, self- analysis and self-determination), Dr. Parsa employed writing as a vehicle to nurture these essential abilities in his young client. Over the first summer, he guided Emmett in crafting a short memoir, which immediately garnered recognition as the best non-fiction piece among 6-8 grade students at a prestigious library contest in his hometown in a suburb of New York.

Since 2016, Emmett  has achieved remarkable success in writing, receiving numerous accolades at regional and national writing contests. He has been recognized as the most influential youth in the state of NY by NY Congress and has appeared in an award-winning documentary about the Holocaust. Additionally, he has delivered hundreds of speeches nationwide on the importance of bystanders’ intervention when witnessing hate crimes. In addition to  his extracurricular accomplishments, Emmett has maintained a perfect GPA in high school, excelling in numerous AP and honors classes. Most recently, he has been admitted to a dozen top tier universities, where he is carefully considering his options.

Nurturing Holistic Growth and Success

Throughout this journey, XQ Focus Consulting has played a pivotal role in Emmett’s development. Beyond continuously refining his writing skills for awards and college applications, we have helped him cultivate a profound understanding of self and others, fostering traits such as empathy, confidence, purpose, and passion. Moreover, we’ve helped Emmett not only to develop key executive functions for school but also learn how to leverage them effectively to achieve success in various aspects of his life.

If you have a child who struggles with executive functions, productivity and motivation but at the same time is in need of enrichment opportunities, we encourage you to reach out to XQ Focus Consulting. Our personalized approach can help unlock your child's potential, cultivate essential executive functioning skills, and pave the way for academic and personal success. Transformative Journey with XQ Focus Consulting

Initial Challenges and Concerns

Jacob, a 6th grade student attending a great public school in the suburbs of New York City,  was referred to XQ Focus Consulting LLC in 2020 by his parents after receiving a concerning neuropsychological evaluation report that found major neurocognitive and psychological challenges including ADD, Expressive Language Disorder (writing), and Specific Learning Disorder with Impairment in Reading (reading comprehension, reading fluency, and reading accuracy).

His parents reported to us that Jacob struggled with reading comprehension, scoring at Level 1 on the New York State standardized exam, had below grade-level writing abilities, showed severe symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and exhibited very low self-confidence and motivation to thrive at school.

Tailored Action Plan and Comprehensive Support

After closely reviewing and interpreting Jacob’s neuropsychological evaluation, we had an accurate understanding of the root cause of his struggles. That understanding, coupled with insights gleaned after meeting with him and his parents, helped us provide the family a detailed action plan tailored specifically for his needs.

Overcoming Hurdles and Achieving Success

Through offering holistic, brain-based and creative protocols, we helped enhance Jacob's confidence and self-awareness leading to significant academic growth. With our guidance, Jacob developed key analytical thinking and executive functions skills and became a straight A student, excelling in his academic pursuits. We also supported his parents in advocating for him at school and provided assistance with various enrichment opportunities outside of school. For example, we helped Jacob participate in writing contests frequently. He received recognition from the prestigious Scholastic Writing Contest for his short story in 9th grade.

As Jacob approaches the college application process, we continue to support him in mastering executive functions and writing skills, ensuring his success in higher education. Jacob now leads a fulfilling life, actively engaging in community service and maintaining a healthy social-emotional balance while remaining highly motivated in his academic endeavors as he nears the end of high school.
